At one point in time there was a really good chance the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” was going to be made. The movie was in the development stages for years. They had to replace their original choice to play Freddie Mercury (Sacha Baron Cohen) after an apparent lack of passion to play the part, and there was all the negative comments about the movie before it was even made. That is all water under the bridge as “Bohemian Rhapsody” has been released. The fans love it, and the critics have shown a lukewarm appreciation for the flick.
The movie has been a huge success! So much so that Queen are back on the album charts in a big way. The soundtrack for “Bohemian Rhapsody” is currently at #3 on the album charts. This is the highest charting album for Queen since their 1980 album “The Game”. But wait there is more! “Queen’s Greatest Hits I II & III Platinum Collection” has also cracked the Top 10 and sits at #9. This is the first time ever that Queen have had 2 albums in the Top 10.
Queen’s biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” also has a chance to be the most successful music biopic ever. It is just behind the NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton”.
Not bad for a movie that was almost not made.
