The Tragically Hip played their final concert in Kingston on August 20, 2016. It became one of the most significant cultural moments in Canadian music history.
“We started here, as you know, and opened up to 13 people, and at our next show we had 28, and at the next Kingston show after that we had six,” Gord Downie said during their final show. The Tragically Hip played for 6,700 inside, with a live stream into Springer Market Square for 25,000 outside.
11.7 million people (nearly a third of Canada’s population) would tune into the telecast.
The Hip would release 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 1 EP, and more than 50 singles, and won 17 Juno Awards.
